The story behind the work.

From the plant floor to the boardroom to the bargaining table, Chelsea has seen what happens when decisions get made far from the people they affect. That is where the Proximity Gap came from.

CHAPTER 01

Chelsea grew up in the Midwest, where the values are straightforward and the winters are not. Her summers were spent doing parts inventories at the family shop, and in college she spent them working road construction. She logged countless hours driving between the little towns of northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. Community wasn’t a buzzword where she came from. It was just what people did. Neighbors showed up for each other, everyone knew everyone’s name, and people were simply better together than apart. That upbringing planted a deep, stubborn belief that the way we treat each other at work is a moral question, not just a management one.

Midwest Roots

CHAPTER 02

Early in her HR career, Chelsea led HR through a union organizing campaign and contract negotiation at the top producing plant of a Fortune 250 food company. An exceptional plant leader had built something rare: a culture so grounded in care that people loved coming to work. Then came standardization, the slow and well intentioned flattening of everything that had made that plant feel like theirs. Decisions started being made for people, not with them, and the employees organized to protect what they had built. Chelsea didn’t just manage a process. She held people through one of the hardest moments of their working lives, and it rewired how she understood leadership.

The Campaign That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 03

Chelsea stepped into one of the most complex HR roles imaginable: leading the people strategy for a private holding company with over 35 brands under one roof. Different industries, different cultures, different challenges. One Chelsea. What she learned: the fundamentals of human-centered leadership don't change based on the industry or the brand on the door. People want the same things everywhere: to be seen, to do meaningful work, to feel like they belong somewhere.

Leading at Scale

CHAPTER 04

Chelsea looked at everything she’d built for other organizations and decided to build something of her own. Versed HR, her boutique HR consulting practice, currently negotiates contracts for local governments in Iowa and supports public sector and nonprofit organizations. Then came the Proximity Gap, the keynotes, the workshops, and the coaching. She’s not done building. Not even close.
